About

‘Mythopoeia’ refers to the creation of new myths or mythologies and is a concept that underpins the practice element of PhD researcher and fine art photographer Lyndsay Roberts. Her work consists of a series of staged photographic tableaux which aim to empower women through feminist revisionism.

Although myths are generally described as widely held but fictitious narratives, they form collective beliefs that justify people’s cultural practices, often blurring the lines between reality and fiction. These exhibited photographs make strategic use of myths as a means of visually exploring and transforming negative ideological constructs, challenging stereotypes of women embedded within.

Lyndsay is an award-winning photographer who combines various processes to construct fine art photographs, which are planned and staged prior to using the camera. Her current research is comprised of two projects, the first portrays key female characters from European mythologies in a positive light and changes the narrative through a feminist lens. The second project is a participatory practice which enables women to address their own concerns regarding stereotypes and to contribute to the photographic process.
